About us
HistoryIn 1991, young people from Halberstadt founded the association “Soziokulturelles Zentrum Zora e.V.” in the roughly 300-year-old granary of the former St John’s monastery, right in the heart of the old town.
Out of the wish for self-determination and self-organisation grew a centre with firm traditions, a wide range of activities and possibilities — one the town’s social and cultural life would be unthinkable without today.
The aim of our work is to show young people alternatives to a consumption-driven way of life, guided by the idea of self-help, and to make leisure time varied, affordable and meaningful.
By the way: the name “Zora” was inspired by the children’s book “The Outsiders of Uskoken Castle” (Die rote Zora und ihre Bande) by Kurt Held!

Activities
AngeboteHere you will find our regular activities. If you want to take part, help out or start something yourself, just drop by and join in. We always welcome new faces, a chat over coffee and fresh ideas!
Please bear with us — not everything always goes to plan. It is best to give us a quick call beforehand or send an email if you are coming for the first time or have not been here for a while, so you do not end up at a locked door.
When do you have time?
Daily 2–6 pm
Monday 3:30–4:30 pm
Open Jam
Every Monday 3:30–4:30 pm in the theatre hall. Try out different instruments: guitar, bass, drums or keyboard. Free of charge, no registration, no age limit.
Monday, even weeks, from 5:30 pm
ADHD self-help group
Every two weeks, always in an even calendar week, from 5:30 pm until about 7 pm.
Tuesday 2–3:30 pm
Language café
Every Tuesday 2–3:30 pm. Get to know other cultures, improve your German while playing, and simply have a good time together. Free of charge!
Wednesday 3–5 pm
Screen printing workshop
Every Wednesday 3–5 pm. Bring your ideas and, if you can, your own textiles, and make your one-off piece yourself using classic screen printing, with expert guidance. Suitable from age 7 and free of charge!
Thursday 10 am – 12 pm
Toddler group
Every Thursday 10 am to 12 pm. Come by with your babies and toddlers and enjoy a relaxed time in our playroom and the adjoining theatre hall. We provide snacks and drinks. This offer is free of charge!
Thursday 4–6 pm
Open wood workshop
Every Thursday from 4 to 6 pm. Try your hand at working with wood and the various tools. Restore furniture or realise your own ideas with expert guidance. Suitable from age 8 and free of charge!
Thu + Fri 3–6 pm
Zora Lounge
Every Thursday and Friday 3–6 pm. An open meeting point to hang out, play table football or pool, talk or do your homework — for kids and young adults aged 7 to 27. With a table football, a dartboard, various games, drinks and snacks.
Last Thu of the month, from 5 pm
Café International
On the last Thursday of the month from 5 pm: cooking, chatting and eating together, with changing dishes. Registration at soziales@zora.de.
Friday 3–4 pm
Improvisational theatre meet-up
Every Friday 3–4 pm. No experience needed, enjoying theatre is enough. We try out simple improvisation exercises and slip into new characters. Suitable from age 7 and free of charge!
